New York / London: Longmans, Green & Co. / Edward Arnold & Co., 1922. Very Good condition. This is the original 1922 HARDCOVER first edition -- not a cheaply-made modern reprint. SEE PHOTOS. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a library discard. Bound in the original bluish gray cloth, stamped with black lettering. In 1919 the author, a former Royal Air Force officer from Birmingham, departed England for New York City. He bought a motorcycle there and spent the season riding it 4,950 miles across the United States to San Francisco. Shepherd says he averaged 75 miles per gallon on the trip and that he "was thrown off 142 times, and after that stopped counting!" Illustrated with 16 photographic plates. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of the author in his cap and leather jacket. Another photo features his motorcycle, "Lizzie" in Arizona's Petrified Forest. This is one of the "Rejected Titles" listed in Bliss, AUTOS ACROSS AMERICA, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF TRANSCONTINENTAL AUTOMOBILE TRAVEL: 1903-1940. Bliss comments: "Unfair. The original 1914 self-published softcover book. 78 pages plus end leaves. Extremely uncommon.Condition of the book is Acceptable. See photos. The softcover wraps show moderate wear. Both the front and back covers have partial tears at their spine joints, but are still attached. The spine itself also has some loss of paper.The text block of the book is complete. The first leaf, and the last leaf, appear to have previously detached from the staple binding, and have been glued in place (an amateurish repair, unfortunately). The last listing photo shows where 'overgluing' of the back leaf has resulted in an edge tear to the inside portion of that leaf. Inside pages are otherwise in good condition, with occasional edge wear. They include many illustrations and full page plates.In sum, a rare and important book, in less than good condition, but still readable.Discounted price for inventory reduction.
