A book on the subject of the Pearl (unsurprisingly) illustrated with 10 coloured plates by Edmund Dulac. Quarter bound with grey boards and white cloth spine, TEG. The top board is decorated with a maritime theme of shells and waves. Limited to 675 copies this copy is, internally, in very good condition with boards that are a trifle scuffed with a rubbed spine (see photos). Two pages have neat pencil annotations. Uncommon.

First edition. 1865 FIRST EDITION ALEXANDER AGASSIZ SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY OF AMERICAN MARINE BIOLOGY BOOK WITH DARWIN CONNECTION. 8 3/4 inch hardcover,vi, 155 pages, original dark green cloth binding, blindstamped covers, gilt title to spine, inscribed front endpaper to "Prof Jeffries Wyman, with the regards of Alex Agassiz". 185 fine wood engravings throughout the text. Spine ends frayed, spine dulled, 1/4 inch chip to bottom corner of free endpaper, otherwise unmarked and overall very good. The 1871 edition is cited by Darwin in his reading notebook. Alexander's father, Louis, had become a passionate anti-Darwinist, whereas Wyman had become an ally! ALEXANDER EMMANUEL RODOLPHE AGASSIZ (1835 - 1910), son of Louis Agassiz, was an American scientist and engineer. Bright copy of this attractive overview of British conchology.Second edition with 26 finely engraved hand-coloured plates by George Brettingham Sowerby II.Includes attractive plates of mussels, scallops, razor shells, cockles, chitons, limpets, whelks, freshwater snails, ear-shells, etc., arranged as if in a case in a cabinet of wonders.Total of 711 species of British shells on 26 plates: 642 figures on the 24 plates from the first edition of 1859, and 69 figures on two extra lithographs by Sowerby.George Brettingham Sowerby II (1812-1884), was a British naturalist, illustrator, and conchologist. Grandson of James Sowerby, the famous English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist.Original red, blind-stamped cloth with gilt title to front board, a.e.g, sunning and stains to spine, bumping to corners, bookplate of Charles H. Shaw on front endpaper, delicately hand-coloured plates with some scattered spotting.

Near fine: a couple of very minor scratches on spine, a little fraying at head of spine, slipcase shows a little shelf wear. Interior of volume and front and back boards are pristine.This volume was a personal gift from Rainier III, Prince of Monaco (1923 - 2005) to the eminent medievalist Kenneth M. Setton (1914 – 1995) on the occasion of a visit by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace to her hometown of Philadelphia in the 1960's. (Professor Setton was at the time Director of Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.) Bound into the volume is the prince's card, with a note in his handwriting to professor Setton.This is a deluxe binding on heavy hand-laid paper with deckled edges and gilt page tops. It is one of a limited number of copies; this copy however is not numbered, apparently because it came from the royal family. It appears to be similar to the 400 Papeteries du Marais exemplars as the pages do not bear the watermarked arms of the Grimaldi family. This edition was published on 11… Read More
