1937. J.P. (John Peter) Laux became a Master Mechanic in 1915 for the Lehigh Railway and rose to Superintendent of Motive Power when Lehigh RR was its highest. He produced this manuscript of which there are no known original copies there are 57 hand mounted photographs in the basic engines and concludes with the Locomotive Ownership by year, 1856-1936. The Average Tractive Force in 1921 was 37,621 lbs but by 1936 it had increased to 51, 293 lbs. The No. 5100 was delivered in 1931 as a class T-1 (two were delivered, Richard Duley notes Baldwin also delivered later at Class T-1a). This original work complements minor details in Duley's significant contribution. There are no copies on OCLC. Since the age of steam ended, these magnificent workhorses were often scrapped. Very few of the locomotives have survived but here are nice black-and-white photographs from Superintendent J.P. Laux that show the Lehigh Valley Railroad's history in the period just before it was supplanted by diesel and the emergence…

First edition of this important work on self-reproduction in machines and life forms, scare in the dust jacket. Von Neumann became interested in the abilities of computers to self-reproduce during his work on the Institute for Advanced Studies computer project - noting that, since a Turing machine can make exact copies of any readable sequence, it can copy itself. He hoped to formulate a theory of self-reproduction that would be general enough to explain and predict self-reproduction in both machines and living things. Printed paper label on front board. Errata slip tipped in following title page. Howes, S 1075. The Pennsylvania Society for the Promotion of Internal Improvement, organized in 1824, sent William Strickland (1787-1854) to England in 1825 to study the most recent developments in transportation engineering in order to improve the ability to travel and ship goods across the state. Over the course of the year, Strickland sent home reports on canals, railways, roads, and iron-making from Great Britain. After his return in Dec., he was appointed engineer of the Pennsylvania State Canal and his reports were issued in this volume. The great interest that it generated is indicated by the 2-page list of subscribers, among whom were canal companies (Delaware…
