Aside from some light spotting to the tissue guards this is a bright and clean copy throughout. Finely bound in nineteenth century full burgundy morocco. Spine with four wide raised bands, each with gilt box ruling. Compartments triple ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards with five ruled line gilt borders. Board edges and turn-ins with gilt decorative roll. All edges gilt. Yellow coated endpapers. Some minor wear to the edges of the binding but overall a very good and attractive copy of this rare work, both inside and out. Half titles present in all three volumes. Two leaves duplicated and incorrectly inserted into the end of volume two, namely 2 pages from the index which appears in volume 3 have been bound in in error, one where page 513/4 should be (easy to see how, both leaves share the signature Ll), the other at the end of the text where a blank should be, and the two leaves of Appendix are bound in the wrong order but complete. A neat previous owner name to the top of the title page in volume 3. Some foxing and offsetting of the text block to a few leaves in each volume, particularly the first pages of volume one, but overall a very good set. Fine clean books which have been finely bound in recent half red morocco leather, spines with raised bands, the compartments lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edges gilt. Red cloth on boards. A little uniform fading to the spines but still overall a near fine set.

A rare bibliographical variant, printed in black on white paper cover plus 4pp rather than than the dark burgundy ink on light grey or brown paper noted in the bibliography (Richards; A269 - note). This copy also varies from Richards A269 with the addition of a portrait frontis of Kipling after an illustration by M. Webb which is printed on stiff dark grey paper. The pages are then bound in a contemporary full burgundy soft suede binding with red, white and blue silk tie to the spine. Front panel lettered in gilt and with blind stamped line ruled border with floral corner pieces. Neat three line inscription to the front free endpaper. Some fraying to the tie-cord but still holding the text pages tightly. A little rubbing to the suede binding and a split to the top inch of the hinge, but overall a lovely presentation of this important work.
