A TRILOGY MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA
by O'Neill, Eugene
- Used
New York: Horace Liveright, Inc., 1931. Three volumes. Small quarto. Plain brown wrappers, titled in manuscript. Slight tanning and use at edges, one corner slightly chipped, small nicks at spine crowns, else very nice. Uncorrected original page proofs of the first edition, text printed on rectos only. The configuration in three parts underscores the emphasis in this format on the "trilogy", as does the emphasis implicit in the title- leaves: in the published form, the placement of 'A Trilogy' and 'Mourning Becomes Electra' were reversed. Uncommon in this format.

Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1975. Uncorrected Proof. Very Good. Advance uncorrected proof of the first British edition. Bound in publisher's blue wraps printed in black with review slip laid in. From the library of Irish writer Francis Stuart, with presentation inscription on the half-title from Ted Hickey reading, "For Francis Stuart from Ted Hickey 18 June 1975," five days prior to the publication date according to the penciled notation on the review slip. A further inscription in another hand reads, "Ted Hickey, Belfast. 26 March 1975." Hickey was Keeper of Art at the Ulster Museum when he commissioned a portrait of Seamus Heaney to be painted by Edward McGuire, which would be used on the rear cover of the dust jacket of the first edition. Very Good, spine toned and with two tiny droplet stains, a bit of wear to wraps. Corners bumped. A scarce, advance format of an early work by Seamus Heaney, with a nice association.

London, United Kingdom: Faber and Faber, 1989 UNCORRECTED ADVANCE PROOF BOUND COPY for the cased and paperback editions (actually copied by Faber from corrected page proofs). Prepublication first edition. [Probable publication date: 18 September 1989.] 55pp. Green soft cover. Clean text pages. "Wolfwatching" was Hughes' 14th collection of poetry - he digs deeply into his own childhood and his family history, as well as writing about nature's violence and the meaning he finds in it. Included in the collection is the poem "The Black Rhino" written for the purpose of raising funds to save this endangered animal. The Library Journal considered reading Wolfwatching was "like visiting a zoo envisioned by Hieronymus Bosch: we're caught between fright and fascination". He was married to the American poet Sylvia Plath until her death in 1963. Ted Hughes is considered one of England's finest modern poets - winning the Whitbread Book of the Year in two…
