Description:
Brookline, MA: David R, Godine SCARCE a haunting and prophetic broadside, Whitman's words written in 1871 following the Civil War as relevant today as then. 22" w x 30 1/2" h, featuring a 20" w x 19/12" h photogravure, printed by Joh. Enschede, Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, portraying Walt Whitman in profile, enlarged reproduction of 1891 photograph of Walt Whitman by Thomas Eakin at head of text. Underneath, the quote, taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas": " We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawaken'd, notwithstanding the resonance and many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is in some sort, younger brother of another great and often-used word, NATURE, whose history also waits unwritten. WALT…

[Vintage World War II Poster]: A CARELESS WORD ... A NEEDLESS SINKING
by Fischer, Anton Otto [(1882-1962) artist]
- Used
Washington, DC, Office of War Information / GPO. 1942. Folio color photolithographic broadside (37 x 29", 94 x 70 cm). Folded, as issued. Faint tanning to folds on blank verso, otherwise a lovely, fresh, unused copy. One of the several dramatic posters published by the OWI and other agencies based on paintings by Fischer focusing on the service of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine after the US's entry into the war. This poster emphasizes the importance of maintaining secrecy surrounding the sailings of merchant vessels. In the foreground, a crew of seamen, two of them badly injured, pull away in a life boat from a flaming and largely destroyed ship that fills the background. This is the larger format of two in which this poster was printed. The German-born Fischer, who left his home country at the age of 15, was sworn in as a Lt. Commander in the Coast Guard, and based on his talent as a commercial illustrator, assigned the duty of portraying visually the involvement of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine in the war effort. Fischer's civilian career included assignments for top US periodicals, as well as illustrating editions of MOBY DICK and other classic works of sea literature.

Description:
ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Francos forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Lets end the Fifth Column. The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.
