Over-Against the Royal Exchange, London.: E. Symon, 1732. 1st Edition . Calf . Very Good/Not applicable. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Xvi pages of translators preface and contents + an Approbation leaf before preface. 372 pages + 2 folding copper plates of the COFFEE plant. Full 18th century calf, a little rubbed at surface and edges inc corners. Armorial bookplate of Sir Rd Bempde Johnstone Bart (1st Baron Derwent of Hackness Hall, Yorkshire). The Treatise on coffee taken from the observations of 1709 is 15 pages and then the Account of the Captivity of Sir Henry Middleton in 1612 is 26 pages and then follows An Historical Treatise on the Origins of Coffee of 86 pages with the 2 plates at the start of this section. CONDITION: lacks early blank or blanks, nothing before title, one plate has a 3 inch closed tear but no loss. there is some handling and rubbing or aging to some pages, but rag paper is all in good order, two very minor worm holes in final two pages, not affecting text, a very good copy of this scarce work with good all round margins and textually complete. All signatures collate and NO missing text. (see photo scans and more can be provided ir required). Other minor issues are pencil notes requesting the return of this if borrowed by Henry Pickering of Retford in Nottinghamshire, just visible on reverse of title and one blank side of one folding plate, could be removed easily, but part of its history as far as I am concerned!. The book can be found with the title spelt as I have done above or "Foelix as it is spelt on the title page and on my previous "duplicate" listing. Done to facilitate any searcher under both or either spelling of this word. Notes**This work contains probably the first full description of coffee in English. The account of the Voyage and the Second Expedition in this volume are anonymous; and they were edited by Jean de La Roque (1661-1743). He was born at Marseilles, studied oriental languages, made some voyages to the Levant himself and served apparently, as correspondent to his father's newspaper... the captain who tells the story of the first voyage in a series of five letters, proves to be Captain Monsieur de Marveille .... But he does not go on the second voyage. The account of that trip was put together by La Roque from information furnished by M. Grelaudiere, who journeyed from Mokha to Muab to cure the King of Yemen, and two ship surgeons, Noiers and Barbier. (Hunt). cf. Hunt, 489; Hünersdorff, Coffee: A Bibliography, p1284.
