An original print of one of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image, half-length formal portrait of future political leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi in character as Zulu King Cetshwayo kaMpande, shows the subject from waist up, dressed in animal skins, with an enormous elephant tusk arching in the background. The image is identified as "No. 5-17" in the series and captioned "Chief Butalezi [sic] in his ancestral robes." Composite photographic image depicting the Chicago lakefront and early planes. The sender's and receiver's details filled out in black ink, and four landmarks noted on the image in the same hand. Marks from stamp, some toning and spotting of the verso, creasing and wear, particularly near the original folds (which are fragile) and at the corners and slightly affecting the image, small tape repair to one corner on the verso. A striking, oversized panoramic postcard photomontage depicting one of the most important aviation events prior to the First World War, the August 1911 International Aviation Meet at Grant Park in Chicago. Oblong Folio (12.5" x 15.5"), contemporary pictorial black lacquered boards inlaid in relief with bone, containing fifty hand-colored albumen photographs measuring generally 7.75 " x 10" mounted recto and verso to 25 thick card leaves, with tissue guards interleaved. Forty-four of the images are titled in the negative. Binding worn: spine perished, boards and ffeps detached (boards remarkably well preserved although lacking two small inlaid pieces), most tissue guards creased and torn, mounts with slight wave and sporadic foxing/ soiling, 3 photos with minute losses at the edges, a few slightly faded or under exposed, most fresh and rich in tonal quality.Although quite probably a composite album representing photos from different studios, certainly many of the images are from the Yokohama studio of T. Inscribed "To Lou , Again, for the third time, you are the best damn cook in the world. Are you ready to sail around the moon- "Pete" Charles Conrad". Inscribed for Louis Hartsell, the chef in the Astronaut Training Facility at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Kennedy/Cape Canaveral. An original photograph, with undated NASA printed notations on reverse indicating that Conrad is one of nine astronauts selected by NASA on September 17, 1962. From Hartsell's collection of astronaut photographs all taken and signed circa 1964-1972. Conrad's "for the third time" indicates that this was signed just before Apollo 12 launched.
