Offering: A signed Victorian era handwriting album done by Francis Ringrose in 1841 at age seven, as part of his moral and penmanship instruction. There are twelve original English round penmanship specimens. Four are adorned, two with script pictures, two with finely executed ornamentation. Each specimen is done in a slightly different style of linked English round, with variations in body shape, stroke contrast and ascender and descender lengths. Ten specimens are done in black ink: two are done with gray and black inks. Each leaf is headed or footed with border or divider examples. The title leaf, adorned with a script picture is signed and dated Midsummer 1841 (June 23). Ending leaves of the three text extracts are signed, each with a signature variant, dated on a different day in the last week of May 1841. Francis Ringrose: believed to have been born November 13, 1833 in Langford, Nottinghamshire, England. Nottingham, the principal town in Nottinghamshire had several contemporary writing masters of note including J. P. Hemm at the Free Grammar School who published "Original Penmanship" (1831) [Wardle], well-received in the London press [London Literary Gazette, 1830, p. 611]. Adornments: 1)Title Leaf: Incorporating scroll patterns, the full-page script picture shows an adult swan protecting a cygnet with three decorated roundels, penmanship in the center done with footed, volumetric letters in gray, black, and white, stems highlighted with hatching after embroidery patterns; the foot border done with a thread and dot pattern. 2) Employment (Leaf 1 / Four Leaves): Title in gothic letters, in the roundel formed by the torso of a winged fowl, shown in profile with extended tongue and detail around the facing eye. The four lines of text are footed by two borders, the bottommost with an underscore and dot pattern. 3) Character (Leaf 1 / Three Leaves): Decorated with an elegant vignette of flourished volutes, richly accented by pennants and hatchings using letter and stroke elements. 4) Habits (Leaf 1 / Four Leaves): Letter forms are decorated with fluid wood grain fills. Adornments have a natural fluidity that avoids "the sheer maze of line" that came to characterize flourishing by 18th century writing masters. [Whalley] Texts: copies of extracts from three essays. 1) Character (3 leaves), signed and dated May 26th, 1841; "To those who are to make their own way either to wealth or honors, a good character is no less necessary than address and abilities." [George Hall, Vicar of Tenbury, Dictate Book, 1831] 2) Habits (4 leaves), signed and dated May 25th, 1841; "Custom has a mechanical effect on the body and at the same time a very extraordinary effect upon the mind." [Joseph Addison, Spectator, no. 477, August 2, 1712] 3) Employment (4 leaves), signed and dated May 29th, 1841; "Industry is not only the instrument of improvement but the foundation of pleasure." [Hugh Blair, Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, 1783] Pagination: Fourteen unnumbered leaves, a blank leaf at each extremity and twelve specimens, each with a bound in tissue interleaf. Format: Leaves are sewn in the earliest quarter red leather and three quarters marbled, pasted paper boards with rounded corners, matching leaves. Size: 374 x 230 mm (14.7 x 9 inches). Condition: Good. Original Penmanship Specimen Leaves: very good, bright and fresh / Boards worn / Binding: solid, needs to be handled with care. Album Detail: Leaves: slight humidity cockling and gentle corner bends, some fingering, some leaves with a light spot in the bottom margin, title leaf with bottom edge spot, Leaf 9 with top margin spot and trace edge wear, one other leaf with slight bottom edge wear. / Endpapers: fingering and some soiling. / Interleaves: generally clean, fingering, corner bends, some creased corners. / Boards: all-around wear, inner sides soiled, back of spine reinforced with tape. / Binding: some cord wear with cord starting to loosen, upper hinge with splitting at crown and foot. Reference: Wardle, Education and Society in Nineteenth-Century Nottingham. Whalley, Pen's Excellencie. Additional Images: by request.
