Undated but circa 1870, August 10.. Circa 1870, handwritten in ink on both sides of a sheet of notepaper with embossed address: Windlesham Court, Bagshot, 150 x 200 mm, 6 x 7¾ inches, folded and written on the 4 panels, signed off on the first panel at the top: "My dear Grant, I got your note to the Savile two or 3 days ago, and your letter yesterday. I'll be very glad if you will send the photograph here, that impenitent thief Guy made no sign on the subject. You must have had a delightful tour. I was on the (...) loch for 6 wweeks, another in Kirkcudbrightshire, and came south taking Notts by the way, to see my small brother's bowling collared by Daft. Then I went to a place in Herts, and then here, and I have a fearful looking forward to of going to St. Andrews soon, to join Myers of Wadham. Poor Monro, I think there are texts enough of Homer, but am in labour with prose crib to the Odyssey, and I believe Bolland and I may do something for the Politics for Passman, but the Publishers haven't quite made up their minds about it yet. If you see Bolland tell him "we will get in Kobougs(?)", this journey, to explain would require a larger sheet of paper and a minuter detail. I should like extremely to take advantage of your kind invitation, and to see Devonshire, where I have never been, but I'm afraid the St Andrews expedition is in the way. Perhaps if you are still in Devonshire before the beginning of term, I may be able to come there. I go abroad for the winter, Cannes and so on, at least so I am told. It must be baddish if it is worse than Oxford in Winter. Please send the photograph. Guy did a pretty good one of my room. Challis has usurped my dominion there. Yours very truly A. Lang". Lang refers to the great batsman Richard Daft, David Binning Monro who was working on a translation of the Iliad published in 1878, William Ernest Bolland who translated Aristotle's Politics which appeared in 1877 with a short introductory essay by Lang. Recipient and photographer referred to not identified. The letter has been folded a second time and is slightly dusty on folds, a little foxing to edges of sheet. The second ALS is an undated brief note on a folklore matter with no address on a slightly larger folded sheet: "Dear Sir, I am sure of Shellicoat, but I have not the reference to some folk lore book. However he is out of my hands now. Sincerely yours, A. Lang". One or 2 fox spots, very good plus. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

"Dear Mrs. Laserte: I greatly dislike writing begging letters but I am as convinced of the great importance of the Boys' Clubs of America that I violate my rule in asking your consideration of a contribution among the many other calls upon you at this time. In this work there are 500 boys' Clubs with more thatn 425,000 boy members in the slum areas of 290 cities throughout the country where we definitely are reducing delinquency, improving health, morals and preparing them for the skilled trades. The are some 3,000,000 such boys and the country is in great need of expansion of this movement. We do no ask for much from any one individual and most gifts are from $10.00 to $25.00. They are, of course, tax deductible. I send you herewith a leaflet which explains the work. I hope it commends itself to you. Faithfully Herbert Hoover. P.S.… Read More
