One of 4 special lettered copies, this is C, each containing a drypoint etching from an impression of 25, cloth-bound and in a red cloth slipcase. This copy further inscribed by the artist on the half-title to a close firend, along with an original full size drawing in pencil to the flyleaf, with a piece of the drawing stretching out to the paste-down endpaper. A unique copy.

Leather at the spine ends very lightly scuffed, one bottom corner very lightly rubbed, plastic jacket included but chipped at the corners and spine ends, with a hole in the middle of the spine. Slipcase present too but also worn at the edges and split at one side. Six Literary Essays. Limited to 500 copies of which this is no. 297, signed by Somerset Maugham.

Page 30 and 31 with suggestions to the titles in pencil made by Gascoyne and initialled by him.

It was also an invaluable aid in the interpretation of classical inscriptions during the Renaissance. The first appearance of the woodcut of a Sibyl. Goff P-996.
