The Sun Also Rises: The Authorized Edition Hardcover - 1996

by Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway's first bestselling novel, set in the cafes of Paris and bullrings of Spain, is a brilliant depiction of the Lost Generation that established him as one of the great prose stylists of all time. This hardcover reprint is a Scribner Classic, commemorating 150 years of publishing excellence.

About this book

Based on real events and acquaintances of Hemingway, Sun Also Rises is about American and English expats in Pamplona.

From the publisher

A Scribner Classics Edition "The ideal companion for troubled times: equal parts Continental escape and serious grappling with the question of what it means to be, and feel, lost." -- The Wall Street Journal One of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read The Sun Also Rises is a classic example of Hemingway's spare but powerful writing style. It celebrates the art and craft of Hemingway's quintessential story of the Lost Generation. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. It is an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises is "an absorbing, beautifully and tenderly absurd, heartbreaking narrative...a truly gripping story, told in lean, hard, athletic prose" (The New York Times).

First Edition Identification

Published by Scribner's in 1926, the first printing of The Sun Also Rises was a fairly small run of 5090 copies.  The original release is notable and identifiable for it's opulent dust jacket, which is an unusually large percentage of the value of first editions.  The attention to the design of the front cover is slightly at odds with other sloppy details. The dust jacket lists Hemingway's previous book as In Our Times rather than In Our Time, one of a number of typos throughout the original publication of the book. The author picture on the back cover is a sketch of Hemingway instead of a more costly photograph, but it is the original work of art on the front of that jacket for which the book is remembered.

About the author

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
