The Majesty of the Mississippi Delta Hardcover - 2002

by Jim Frasier; Wes Freeman (Photographer)

From the publisher

This book presents the manner in which builders adapted to the whimsy of a river and the tides of technological, social, and political change while preserving the beauty and grandeur for which the South is known.

From the rear cover

"With us, when you speak of 'the river, ' though there are many, you mean the great river, the shifting unappeasable god of the country, feared and loved, the Mississippi."
--William Alexander Percy

The Mississippi Delta region and its architecture possess majesty drawn from the arresting character of its people, the grand scope of the river's altered course, and the grace of the structures that cling to the rich alluvial soil.

Included here are the few antebellum mansions of northwest Mississippi, like the Balfour house and Cedar Grove in Vicksburg. There are also many structures related to the cotton industry, like Greenwood's Historic Cotton Row District, and sites literary and religious, like Rowan Oak in Oxford and Hebrew Union Temple in Greenville. Overall, this collection presents interior and exterior details of the often-forgotten architecture that reveals the true Mississippi Delta.

Author Jim Fraiser is a practicing attorney in Jackson, Mississippi. He is the author of Mississippi River Country Tales, also published by Pelican, and is a frequent contributor to local newspapers and magazines. He is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his family.

West Freeman is a native New Orleanian photographer who specializes in architecture and interiors. His photographs have been featured in Architectural Digest, New Orleans Magazine, Southern Accents, and the Times-Picayune. They are also a part of the permanent collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
