New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. Translated by Dara Silone (We believe the translator was the author's wife Darina Silone, born in Ireland) First English language, First American Edition. While the book states First Edition, it was first published previously in the author's native Italian in 1952. 8vo size hardcover with color illustrated dust jacket; 314 deckle edge pages From jacket: "In this drama of a love affair and a life-and-death adventure int he hills of Southern Italy, the author of Bread and Wine has achieved what critics have already pronounced his "maturest and finest work." A best seller throughout Europe, it is the story of two young people, Rocco and Stella, and the dangers to which they are exposed by their unorthodox romance and defiance of the local Communists." Ignazio Silone was the pen name of Italian politian and author Secondino Tranquilli (1900-1978.) Jacket spine is chipped at top of spine and worn at heel of spine; there is a quarter inch tear near the spine side bottom of front cover. The jacket spine is tanned. There is a small chip on bottom of back of jacket and two inch scratch on back of jacket. . First American. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
