Hardcover, original tooled leather boards rebacked with modern leather, aeg, blue, cream and yellow paper, (141) pp. Autograph album compiled by Lizzie Burnett, with two page handwritten note by her dated Christmas Day 1879 extolling the pleasures of an autograph album and comparing its importance to the proverbial Book of Life. Includes the signatures of: President Rutherford B. Hayes and his cabinet, Secretary of State William M. Evarts, Secretary of Treasury John Sherman, Secretary of War George W. McCrary, Secretary of the Navy Richard W. Thompson, Postmaster General David M. Key, Attorney General Charles Devens, Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court M. R. Waite and Associate Justices Nathan Clifford, Noah Swayne, Samuel Miller, Stephen Field, William Strong, Joseph Bradley, John Marshall Harlan. 70 (of the 76) senators (Vice President Wheeler's signature does not appear to be in here) including Union General and Senator of Rhode Island Ambrose Burnside. All of the senators signed with their name and state. 112 members of the house, again with most signing their name plus city and state, including future president James A. Garfield of Ohio who succeeded Hayes. Finally, 4 signatures of private citizens of Keota, Iowa and one of Angola, Indiana toward the rear. 3 leafs near the middle have sprung from the binding and are now laid-in. Old bookseller tag of Franklin Book House on the front pastedown. Leather boards scuffed and edgeworn; only a few small stains throughout. A former owner has written in the positions of some of the signers next to their autograph in light pencil.
