3 Page Autographed Letter By a Criminal Evading the Pinkertons

by Hesse, Gus

1892. A fascinating letter of a criminal's miserable life under pursuit with the original mailing postmarked mailing envelope. We learn from Gus Hesse's envelope that his brother [J. Fred Hesse] was a physician at 102 Clark Street in Cincinnati. The letter starts out, "Dear Bro. Fred, I guess you will be surprised to hear that I am in Cleveland. Well my life has been made miserable by detectives following me all over the country." Here he traces his journey from Cincinnati to Chicago to Milwaukee to Minneapolis when he saw the detectives, he jumped off the train just about 27 miles after leaving Milwaukee. He was injured but survived the jump with blood on his clothes and made his way to an inn where he had to pay $2 to stay all night (a high price in 1892 for a room). He then went back to Milwaukee took the steamer for Ludington, Michigan (just across Lake Michigan). He learned that the detectives were on the lookout for him at all the major stations but he went to Detroit. It was apparently an order from Judge Ellis B. Gregg (the Cincinnati judge over criminal court matters) that ordered his arrest. Gus notes he is hiding out in Cleveland and wants to know if his friend Leyon was sent to the work house? He signs and notes that mail could be sent him care of the Adams house at 241 Pearl Street, Cleveland. It was reported less than a year after this letter that August [Gus] Hesse, a former druggist, who had appeared before Judge Gregg a number of times had been sentenced to the Workhouse and fined. Although his father was a well known Cincinnati barber and his brother, a physician, little is known about his end though he appears in the 1900 US Census as an inmate at the Longview Hospital in Cincinnati. Perhaps Gus's problem with alcohol and crime is what led his brother as a doctor to devote himself to Cincinnati's Home for the Incurables [Cincinnati Directory, 1914]. A remarkable firsthand account of one involved in a life of crime pursued by detectives. A very good copy with the original mailing envelope.

Description:
Each letter written to Francis Lawrence Bickley, author of The Adventures of Harlequin which was one of early fine books he illustrated. Each written on his letterhead John Austen. The September letter is not dated by year but from internal evidence points to 1925 when his "Rogues in Porcelain" was issued by Chapman and Hall. Austen writes that he is glad he thinks well of the "Rogues" and I look forward to your criticism of it. [In a case of apparent censorship, he writes:] "A[rthur]. Waugh, publisher of Chapman and Hall, is [desolatest?] because forsooth I have included "The Dove" its evidently the first line he had read it, as he knew well that I was to use it and now he says its indecent and will probably stop sales. I suggest it only increases them. I will certainly tell him to include the Bookman in his list but probably has already done so." He goes on to note: "I enclose the proof of your story which I enjoyed muchly--wish I could decorate a volume of such. Certainly, I will do something with… Read More
