1867 first edition. 311 pages plus publisher's advertising at the back.
"Receipts" in the title has the now antiquated meaning of recipe, or formula. This is not a cook book (as others have described reprint editions), but more of a formulary for all manner of concoctions having application to 19th Century life. Casual browsing of the book reveals such topics as treating rupture in swine, making British Champagne, and a affecting a cure for Quinsy.
Condition of the book is Good. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete, with very occasional light pencil marks next to the text, probably made by someone who had Quinsy. The book shows general wear from age and prior use.
Please message me with any questions.

Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected. In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."
The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Description:
This early American textbook has a quarter leather binding, with the spine in leather and heavy paper boards. The boards show considerable wear, with the marbled paper cover stripped away in places and heavily worn in others. However, both boards are firmly attached to the spine and the binding is still tight with all pages intact. The pages are heavy textured paper, some staining, but in amazingly good condition, considering the age of this obviously much-used volume. Except for some long-hand division on the inside of the back board, the book is unmarked. The best feature of the text is its content--besides all sorts of mathematic information, problems and measurements, it also has instructions/examples of all sorts of things mathematical--eg. the correct way to design a graph, calculations for different forms of weight, motion. measures of all kinds and an entire section of the appropriate forms of notes, deeds, bonds, receipts and wills--all in the erudite, charming language of the age. This is a…

Philadelphia: John E. Potter & Company, 617 Sanson Street, 1867. Octavo (19 x 13 cm.), 311, 12 pages. Publisher's advertisements. Evident third printing. Originally published by the author in Lebanon, Penn. in 1860 as 600 Miscellaneous Valuable Receipts (with identical pagination). The second printing appeared in 1867, but with a differently styled publisher information. A household recipe book, with a significant selection of beverages, including brandies, ciders, cordials, gin, rum, wines and whiskeys. Also included are perfumes, numerous cures for humans, horses, and swine, and many other household handy items. The author was clearly interested in measurement and standards, as this work emphasizes its "valuable gauging tables" and his first work ~ Two recipes (both for cleaning woolen) have been excised on a single clipping and then laid back in. Some soiling to endpapers. In slightly rubbed, bumped, and edge-worn black- and gilt-stamped brown cloth. otherwise very good. [OCLC locates eleven…
