N.p.: N.p., 1856. Paperback. Small 4to. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Slight overall age toning, mainly to outer wrappers; occasional light foxing. Interesting compilation of extracts from Congressional speeches "by Southern members, in which is avowed the purpose... of dissolving the Union and overturning the existing Federal Government." Slavery and the fugitive slave law crop up often, and the troubled author concludes: "The shadows, sir, of the COMING STORM already darken our pathway. It will soon be upon us WITH ALL ITS FURY." Not in Sabin.

Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1866. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers, else tight and nice. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I, P 275A. SABIN 14457.

Annapolis, MD: State of Maryland, Executive Department, 1863. Paperback. Self-cover. 8vo. 4pp. Very good. Minor binding traces. Clean and bright, with an attractive Maryland state seal at upper left of the first page. This November 2nd proclamation "To the Citizens of the State and more especially the Judges of Election" indignantly protests a military order stating that "evil disposed persons" found in Maryland and tolerated by state officials would be attempting to disrupt elections and authorized military personnel and provost marshals to arrest persons loitering about polling places. The text of General Schenck's October 27th General Order No. 53 giving this direction is included, as is Lincoln's directive revoking the offensive portion of Schenck's order. Uncommon.

First Edition Maroon Half-Leather. #411 of 500 copies. This is Illustrated by John Groth. This limited editon in two volumes, is in a beautiful slip cased, with red leather spines and buckram covered boards. Paper labels on spines and front boards. Volume one is signed by the editor, the illustrator and by O. Scott Petty, the author's Grandson, who wrote the introduction.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887. This is the scarce First American Edition. It was originally bound in the publisher's red wrappers. This copy is graded just Fair because only the spine of the wrapper is still here, i.e. both the front and back wrapper are missing. However internal condition is Very Good with all pages present and still securely sewn together (NOT glued like a modern paperback). SEE PHOTOS. NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. Autobiography of Admiral Hobart Pasha (Augustus Charles Hobart-Hampden, 1822-1886) a British Royal Navy officer, and winner of the Victoria Cross. Clean, no names, no writing. 4to gray cloth. A much needed and enormous undertaking. Contains 2,006 entries. Very Rare, Unpublished Doctoral Thesis. A Presentation Copy Signed and Inscribed by the Author, Frank Allen Dennis, but the Signature and Inscription is Partially Marked-Out. This Book is in Acceptable Condition. The Gray Buckram Boards have Light Rubbing and Light Edgewear but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Any Major Damage. The Binding is Strong and Intact but with Slight Sagging, typical in such a Large Book. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked (other than the Partially Marked-Out Author's Signature and Inscription) with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining and have Occasional Very Light Foxing but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Other Major Damage. The Interior does have a Slight Musty Odor, though the Musty Odor is not overpowering, it and Foxing are the only reasons this Book is only in Acceptable Condition. OCLC shows no holdings for this order. Signed in type: Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Andrew Johnson, President and W. Hunter, Acting Secretary of State. Announcement of the order by President Johnson to end the naval blockade against foreign commerce, except in the ports of Galveston, Lasalle, Brazos de Santiago (Port Isabel) and Brownsville, Texas. "All such offenders will be held and dealt with as pirates." Although Lee had surrendered in April 1865, the Confederate armies in Texas had not surrendered, hence the U. S. naval blockade on Texas ports needed to be maintained.
