The book was designed by Ilya Kabakov (b. 1933) conceptual artist, major figure in Moscow Conceptualism, one of the most important Russian artist of the XXth century . He studied at the V.I. Surikov State Art Institute in Moscow, where he learned graphic design and book illustration. Kabakov worked as an illustrator of children's books (over 150 in total) 3-6 months per year and it earned him a decent salary and a studio in Moscow to work in. In 1987 he began to travel abroad and ultimately settled in the United States. This unusual ABC book was compiled with the basic technique terms (motor, screw, pump, centrifuge, etc.) and addressed to 'the future engineers, architects, scientists'.
