.
Bizarre & violent tale of a (White) European who becomes King of the Zulu, a sideshow act…told in pictures & rhyming verse.
Hansen, Peter. Zulukafferhövdingen Peter Hansens Liv Og Levnet. København: Gandrup & Co, 1874. 32 leaves, printed on recto side only, illustrated; bound in cloth. Danish language.
A graphically illustrated book told in verse form. The life and fantastic (mis)adventures of a well-to-do young man who finds his world turned upside down when he's conscripted to the French Foreign Legion and sent to fight in Africa; here he kills his share of enemies before being captured by Arabs, who torment him and tie him to a giraffe to be chased and ultimately devoured by lions, only to find himself rescued by a Zulu chief, who "paints" him with brown root so that he presents as a Zulu. No longer "white" Hansen established himself as a leader, selling what appears to be an elixir of some kind, and returns to Europe where he winds-up performing as Chief of the Zulus in a traveling side show. The book ends with him savagely beating and dismembering his earlier wife's new husband in their middleclass home, with the final leaf showing a classic family mourning pose around an engraved urn.
We admit to having difficulty translating, as good as Google is, so we may not have the story exactly right-but whatever it is it is certainly rare. OCLC shows 2 locations, both in Denmark. We found no copies on the market in any format, nor any historical record, only the publisher's notices for the title in book annuals during the 1870's & 1880's.
Please see images. Inquiries welcome. Thank you.

Featuring 27 black and white photos with captions on 11 plates, each plate with a tissue guard. Wear and soiling commensurate with age, with corners rounded and occasional slight, closed tears along fore-edge of two or three plates, each less than an inch. With an errata sheet bound in. This is not a volume in Ogawa's "Illustrations of Japanese Life," a small-format series on various subjects published from 1890s-1910s, but a large folio volume in a series published with uniform covers. The publications provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. In the 1880s Ogawa studied photography in Boston; occasionally his captions here reflect the whimsy popular in the US at that time: "Country Belles in Their Best" or "He is Coming? Featuring 13 black and white photos with captions, one per plate, and one colored photograph, each plate with a tissue guard. Wear and soiling commensurate with age, most notably on the top left corner of the front cover. With corners rounded and slight edge chipping. The rear cover has slight damage visible at a lower corner (please see photo). With an errata sheet bound in. This is a large folio volume in an Ogawa series published with uniform covers. While other titles appear on the open market, "Chrysanthemums of Japan" is scarce; auction records indicate only one sale in the last few years, in England. Greece: London Rodwell & Martin. 1821. Aquatint view of Thermopylæ from the Deluxe edition of Dodwell's "Views in Greece". Original hand colour, mounted on card with title caption to verso The view shows the pass of Thermopylæ with the plain down to the sea, on the left is Mount Knemis and also Mount Å’ta, Thermopylae means "hot gates" in Greek and the name is related with its hot sulphur springs. This is also the place of cavernous entrances to Hades in mythology. Thermopylae is primarily known for the battle that took place there between the Greek forces including the Spartans and the Persian forces. It is the only land route large enough to bear any significant traffic between Lokris and Thessaly and thus was the site of several battles.. Dodwell states that the two figures are"attendants of the author, for as the defiles of Thermopylæ are sometimes infested with banditti ,it was necssary to be well prepared." Bright and clean. xii+144 pages Illustrated throughout. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in original pictorial boards in original pictorial jacket in a custom slipcase. First edition, first state, with the De Vinne Press seal immediately below the copyright notice. The Brownies is a series of publications by Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox, based on names and elements from English traditional mythology and Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. Illustrations with verse aimed at children, The Brownies was published in magazines and books during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Not unlike fairies and goblins, Brownies are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. Never allowing themselves to be seen by mortal eyes, they are male, drawn to represent many professions and nationalities, all mischievous members of the fairy world whose principal attribute is helping with chores while a family sleeps. The Brownie characters became famous in…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony…
