Description:
This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 (Volume I) to 1859 (Volume XIX). The significance of this set is that Volume IX contains the 1st appearance of the Dickens classic "HARD TIMES" (please see photos). "Hard Times was first published serially in "Household Words" in the April 1, 1854 issue (volume IX), followed shortly thereafter by the 1st edition in book form in the same year. Seldom found complete in 19 Volumes."Household Words" was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens and was published every Saturday from March 1850 to May 1859. This set contains 19 hardcover volumes which contain the complete run of individual issues. To boost slumping sales, Dickens serialized his classic novel "Hard Times" in weekly parts between April 1st and August 12th 1854. This is a great condition, antique collection of 18 Alexander Pope volumes comprised of 2 complete sets (Homer's Iliad and The Works of Alexander Pope) and 1 incomplete set (Homer's Odyssey). The volumes were published in 1796 and 1797 in London by Law, Johnson, et al. Leather-bound with decorative gilt spines and gilt trim on the board edges. The collection includes the following:
* THE ILIAD OF HOMER (1796; complete in 6 volumes; Alexander Pope translation)
* THE ODYSSEY OF HOMER (1796; volumes III, IV and V only [of a 5-volume set]; Alexander Pope translation)
* THE WORKS OF ALEXANDER POPE (1797; complete in 9 volumes)
Condition:
The volumes are in overall very good condition with only very minimal wear, such as some light wear at some corners and at the top/bottom edges of some spines. The volumes are very clean internally - most nearly appear unread with only some occasional light foxing (the foxing is most prevalent - and heaviest - on the end papers). All volumes have an antique bookplate affixed to the front pastedown; a few also have a small London bookshop label affixed to the pastedown). A few of the spine labels have some light chipping, or have lifted a bit at one edge. Pope's Works vol IX has a few lines written in very light pencil on the front end paper...no other writing found. The Roman numeral on the spine has rubbed off from 7 of the volumes. All volumes are tightly bound with firmly attached covers. A very nice collection.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
