About This Item
Boston: Dana Estes and Company, 1897. Very Good. Boston: Dana Estes and Company, 1897. Limited 'Connoisseur' Edition, this being #37 of 250. Four volumes bound in three quarter leather over marbled paper boards; spines lettered in gilt; five raised bands; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Frontispiece and black and white illustrations to each volume. Includes selections of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poetry and letters throughout.
Some rubbing to edges and bands of spine; spines are a touch faded. One chip to rear fore-edge of volume four. Bindings are sound and interiors are clean. Overall a handsomely bound set.
Upon publication of this first biography of Tennyson, the Baltimore Sun asked:
"What is Tennyson's place in English letters? Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Tennyson? Or is the position of the latter two to be reversed? It looks like it at present.
"If so, and in any case indeed, he will live with us in the best, most significant and satisfactory biograph of both man and poet, that exists for our delight, information and profit.
