He was a fellow at the Institute of Current World Affairs, and served as foreign correspondent in China for Chicago Daily News. His counsel to the White House led to Nixon's historic visit to Beijing, 1972. Service provides a rebuttal to the charges leveled against him during the McCarthy era, providing a lucid and well-referenced narrative of the final months of WWII.
