New York: David McKay, 1919. A fine copy of the first edition in scarce dust wrapper with some soiling and wear. All of the first issue points except gilt titles on the cover. All other points match Nudelman A53. The pictorial pastedown on the front cover is most often found with scratches and other problems. This copy is exceptionally nice.

Full black cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Fine copy in the red and black printed dustwrapper which is fine. ---- The rare hard cover of this important work. The book was issued in hard and soft cover with this variant being by far the hardest to find. A remarkable book full of Earnshaw's surreal, humorous and dark illustrations. A contemporary review of the book from the Times educational Supplement perhaps sums it up best; "It is fair to say that the author explores a landscape which suggests Magritte and Monty Python. The humour is austere, bleak and if not black, at least charcoal grey. As a feat of imagination the work is outstanding.".

This edition was printed on thicker high quality paper. With frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick, 4 portraits of Bewick by different engravers, and numerous engravings to illustrate the Fables. Contents: frontispiece; title page with small ink signature to top dated 1824; advertisement; Memoir; Catalogue; portraits; table of contents; select fables - pp1-332. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands to the spine and marbled boards. Page edges lightly marbled. The binding has wear to corners and the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good clean condition. There are some faded areas to the foredge marbling. The original endpapers are present. The preliminaries and the frontispiece are very spotty, and the frontispiece has a small repaired section in the gutter. LONDON : Hodder & Stoughton, 1908 A very good copy of the 1st trade edition with 40 tipped in colour plates by Edmund Dulac. In original green decorative cloth binding with gilt design on front board and spine. The binding is clean with bright gilt to the front board and spine. It has been professionally rebacked so is sound and tight. There is slight marking at the bottom edge of the front board and some very slightly paler areas on the back board. Corners with light wear. The original green endpapers are present with an inscription dated Xmas 1908 to the fep. There is some light foxing to the half title. Contents in very good condition being very clean with some light toning to page edges. The plate at p11 has a small corner crease and the tissue guard to the plate at p126 is creased.

Illustrated with both color as well as black & white photos, this book contains articles by 51 different authors. A few pages contain minimal highlighting, else the book is in very good condition. Colour frontis and fifty colour plates, mounted onto thicker paper and with a printed tissue guard. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Illustration of Rip Van Winkle stamped in gilt to front board. Lower hinge split to the middle of spine. Apart from some foxing to the first four text pages this is a clean copy internally. A near very good copy of this beautiful book. The first of the famous tipped in colour plate gift books that made Rackham a household name.:.

Davis, 22.3.28" A very good copy in original grey canvas spine, lettered in black, with red paper covered boards with black lettering and illustration to the front board. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill. Publishers original salmon cloth with decorative floral design to front board and spine in brown, lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Some minor offsetting to blank endpapers but internally clean and bright. Some marking to the rear board but still overall a very good copy. Becoming increasingly difficult to find in collectable condition in the publishers cloth.
