In his early career Peale was a portrait painter, soldier and politician, and in later life turned his attention to the establishment of a museum of natural history. Franklin encouraged his project; Jefferson befriended and promoted it. KARPEL H416-H417. "...these volumes remain the standard work on Peale." Vol. I, a signed presentation copy.
