(Hartford): N.p., 1889. (3)pp., rectos only. Dated July 15, 1889, from Clemens to his daughter, Clara, signed "Papa," about a train disaster in Virginia. An update about the wreck arrived in a letter while Clemens was dining with his friend, Charles Dudley Warner, a fellow American writer. Clemens's vivid description of the event brings alive the immediacy of the disaster. He writes, "... that late accident still grows & grows. There had been a washout; several hundred feet of the road were gone; two hours after midnight that sleeping-car train dashed in to that vacant space in a pouring rain, & mingled its wreckage with the chaos of rocks, weeds, rails & freshet-rubbish contributed by the washout; the crushed passengers woke up & wailed out in that rainy thick darkness; then the cheerful car-stove came to their help; & gave them light, & burnt them up." He goes on to describe how a young girl (Miss Patty Carrington) was killed in the fire, and how the girl's adoptive mother, Mrs. Judge Thompson, who survived the crash, lost all of her clothing and baggage containing two centuries-worth of family heirlooms as well. The accident to which he refers happened on July 2, 1889, on the Norfolk & Western Railroad line near Thaxton, VA. It was the most serious accident in the railroad's history: seventeen people were killed and many more were injured. Clemens closes the letter on a lighter note, describing a piece by Beethoven performed by his neice: "the one where, all along & all along, half a dozen of the bass notes keep rolling back down stairs a little way - only to the first landing; & get up again & roll down again & are the darling of the piece & the charm of it." He signs the letter, "Goodbye dear heart - write me again. Papa. P.S. I don't mean this letter as an answer to your letter, it is merely a response." With the original envelope addressed to Clara in Elmira, NY, where Clemens and his family kept a summer home. A dramatic and historical letter that captures Clemens's instinct for storytelling. Fine.

I compose on a typewriter, and though I may write a page a dozen times, when I finally leave it, it is finished. Indeed, long before this book was finished, it was going into galleys. 1900. Single leaf. Single leaf manuscript letter on 30 Wellington Court, Albert Gate stationery (his residence from January to July 1900); near fine. Single leaf. Clemens on the health of his daughter. Clemens writes from their home in London to Mr. Howard, declining an invitiation to spend time at his country estate, citing his daughter's health ahead of their return trip to the United States, May 7, 1900 Dear Mr. Howard: It would be such rest & refreshment for us if we could take advantage of your hospitable offer! But our youngest daughter's health is such that of late we are obliged to remain constantly by her to the end that the physician's efforts may be vigilantly & capably seconded, & her slowly improving strength building for the homeward flight in July. My wife & I, join in cordial thanks to you & to Mrs. Howard for your kind invitation & in sharp regrets that we must lose the privilege & pleasure which you offer us. Sincerely yours, S.L. Clemens.

Description:
Vancouver, CA: np, 1895. First edition. Matted and framed. Very Good. LONG HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SIGNED LETTER WRITTEN BY S.L. CLEMENS (A.K.A. MARK TWAIN). The impact of the Paige typesetting machine on Mark Twain's life cannot be overstated. Awed by the prospect of the biggest revolution in textual history since the Gutenburg Press, Twain held faith in the machine's potential despite many warning signs, notably persistent breakdowns of Paige's machine and the advent of Linotype. Why did Twain refuse to let go of this dream? "[P]erhaps, in the end, the Paige typesetting machine was simply the best tall tale he'd ever heard," writes critic Ron Powers, arguing that the financial decline in Twain's life resulting from his misjudged investment of his own wealth and his wife Olivia's inheritance (along with a series of personal tragedies including the loss of his wife and two of his daughters in the decade following 1895) correspond directly with a diminution in his characteristic wit and levity… Read More

The American Baptist Publication Society sold to John Wanamaker the Crozier Building at 1420 and 1422 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, for $900,000. The Crozier Building was designed by Frank Miles Day & Brother and was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1980. American merchant John Wanamaker (1838-1922) had made $1.5 million in profits and interest from his stores in Philadelphia and New York in 1904, suggesting that his acquisition of the Crozier Building was an investment. The Crozier Building has continued to function as a successful office building to this day.
