Albany, NY: August 6th, 1877.. 1877.. Good. - Approximately 40 words penned in black ink & filling 1 side of a sheet of cream-colored paper folded to form 4 sides, each 6-1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide. Signed "John V. L. Pruyn". The paper is slightly darkened and there are 2 small stains to the left edge of the letter with additional stains & several notations on the 3 blank sides. Folded once for mailing. Good. <p>Pruyn writes to John E. Page of the "Young Mens Assn" thanking him for sending a check for $500 for three months' rent. He notes that absence has prevented him from acknowledging it sooner.<p>John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn [1811-1877] was a New York Democratic politician of Dutch descent, Van Schaick, Lansing and Pruyn all being prominent Dutch family names in upstate New York. Pruyn was U.S. representative from New York from December 1863 to March 1865. He was elected a member of the Albany Institute in 1831 and served as its president from 1857 until his death.
