Bull started his career preparing animals for mounting at Rochester's Ward's Museum before working as a taxidermist specializing in the anatomy of birds and animals. He designed recruiting posters during the first World War. Subsequently, living near the Bronx Zoo he had ample opportunity to sketch those animals and made several trips to study wildlife in Central and South America. He wrote and illustrated "Under the Roof of the Jungle" and illustrated a number of Jack London's books including "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang". He also illustrated Archibald Rutledge's "Old Plantation Days", Charles G.D. Robert's "The Hunters of the Silences" and many more.
