Some Wear And Soiling. Harold Victor Bauer (1873 - 1951) Was A Noted Pianist Who Began His Musical Career As A Violinist. He Took Up The Study Of The Violin Under The Direction Of His Father And Adolf Pollitzer. He Made His Debut As A Violinist In London In 1883, And For Nine Years Toured England. In 1892, However, He Went To Paris And Studied The Piano Under Ignacy Jan Paderewski For A Year, Though Still Maintaining His Interest In The Violin. An Anecdote Reports That Paderewski Jokingly Told Bauer To Concentrate On The Piano Because "You Have Such Beautiful Hair". Typed and handwritten signed letter to "My dear Watson" dated 5th January 1934. 1pp. 20cm x 25cm. King's College Zoological Department headed watermarked notepaper. The advance copy of the book mentioned is Huxley's "Elements of Experimental Embryology" co-written with Gavin de Beer. "I have got a German refugee working here who is getting interesting results with Sabella". The German refugee was Fabius Gross (1906 – 1950) Hitler's Black Book entry: "Since 1934 – Researcher at King's College, London University. Speciality – genetics; experimental cytology; protozoology; experimental zoology." Gross and Huxley published 'Regeneration and reorganisation in Sabella' in 1935. The letter also mentions work with Alexander Wolsky and C. J. Bond.

Handwritten note in pencil to verso: "Touting for signatures for candidature for Roy Soc". Nominated for candidature many times from the 1920's, and failing each time, it was not until 1938 that Huxley was eventually admitted as a Fellow. The tone of the… Read More

Dickinson, Lisbon, Ohio, accepting the invitation he had extended from Starr Post 138, G.A.R., in Lisbon, Ohio, for her to visit on Memorial Day. Kate Brownlee Sherwood (1841-1914) was a poet and journalist, as well as the editor from 1883 of the Woman's Dept. of The National Tribune, a monthly publication for Civil War veterans and their families. She also helped to organize the Woman's Relief Corps to aid the Grand Army of the Republic the same year, was the first president of the Ohio Newspaper Women's Association in 1902, and supported women's suffrage. J. M. (John M.) Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon, Ohio, through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon… Read More
