Description:
London: Tinsley Brothers, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the rarest binding state (without Burton's name or FRGS on the spines), but with a "second edition" slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher, as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I, and the map (now detached and laid in) is in Volume II. . Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed, but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and slavery, among other things. The account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining is credited with…

Amsterdam: Herman Uytwerf, 1738. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes, pp. [xiv], 370, [6]; 430,[ 6], with six folding plates and a folding map. Modern full-leather with marbled endpapers. Title pages clipped at upper and lower edges; damage with losses to three plates, repairs to back of map; all else very good. Le Beau was transported from France to Quebec in 1729, probably on a charge of libertinism. According to his own account, he was appointed a clerk in the Beaver Office and then chief clerk in the King's warehouses. Bored and depressed, he stole gunpowder from the warehouses and set off for New England. A warrant for his arrest was issued, but he escaped, encountering many perils (natural and human) before he reached Boston and eventually sailed for Holland. His ensuing work on his adventures in North America includes much detail on Huron, Iroquois, and Algonquin customs, but its style has been dubbed fanciful. Howes (L-167) describes the work as "a basically veracious narrative from competent authorities, though somewhat romanticised." The Dictionary of Canadian Biography argues that Le Beau "deserves credit for painting an exact picture of the customs and character of the Canadians," noting that "the best chapters are those that discuss the habits of beaver and the religious ideas of the Indians." 1769 1ed Charlevoix History of Paraguay Jesuit Missionary Voyages Brazil TribesPierre Charlevoix's 'History of Paraguay' is a valuable history of the Jesuit missionary voyages to South America. It includes extensive descriptions on Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina with information about local tribes. Perhaps Cox's description of the work is the most telling of its value:
"The most complete and satisfactory work on Paraguay, and the only one in which the vast system of the Jesuits is fully developed, the position of the author affording him peculiar opportunities for its examination."

Amsterdam: Chez Herman Uytwerf, 1738.. Two volumes. [14],370,[6]; 430,[6]pp., plus six plates (all folding). Lacks the folding map. Titlepages printed in red and black. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt. A near fine copy. In 1729, Le Beau was transported to New France from a French prison where he had been incarcerated for libertinism. He fled from Quebec to Holland in 1730, having been charged with counterfeiting and thereby facing a death sentence. Sabin describes his narrative as "a pleasant gossiping book, evidencing considerable acquaintance with the subjects described. It contains a description of the manners and customs of the Iroquois, the Hurons, the Algonquins, and other Indian tribes, derived from the author's personal experiences, although the style in which the work is written is rather that of a romance than a true narrative." Of particular interest are the chapters in which the author discusses the habits of the beaver and the religious ideas and customs of the Indians. "A…

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Prompted by the Irish MP Arthur Dobbs, the Admiralty sent the Furnace and Discovery to Hudson Bay in 1741 in search of navigable passage to the Pacific. The expedition was commanded by Christopher Middleton, until his resignation in March 1741 a sea-captain in the service of the Hudson Bay Company. With his actions closely scrutinized by his former…
