About This Item

Vercelli: Tipografia Patria, 1783. Very Good. 21 cm; [viii], 188 pages, ads. In red and black mottled paper-covered boards and red leather backstrip. Edges sponged with blue. Pages rather toned. Old ex libris and owners inscriptions on front blank.

Historical novel by the theorist of Italian enlightenment, first published in 1780. Unusual Vercelli imprint from the presses established and directed by Giovanni Antonio Ranza (1741-1801), who attempted unsuccessfully to inspire revolt against the local nobility before being forced to flee his native Vercelli for Switzerland, and ultimately to France.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
