Jessie Willcox Smith. 342pp. Small quarto [24.5 cm] Beige cloth covered boards with gilt and blue ink stamped titles and decorative borders on the spine and front cover, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Top edge gilt. Illustrated endsheets. The extremities are gently bumped, and the cloth at the spine ends is lightly frayed. The hinges are a bit soft. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the half title page. The text block is just barely starting to crack in a couple places. Nudelman A53. With 8 full-color plates by Jessie Willcox Smith. Jessie Willcox Smith was an illustrator from the United States famous for her work in magazines such as Ladies Home Journal and for her illustrations for children's books.

Synopsis

At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It was serialized in the children's magazine Good Words for the Young beginning in 1868 and was published in book form in 1871. It is a fantasy centered around a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond travels together with the mysterious Lady North Wind through the nights.
