Vienna: Wilhelm Melzer, 1909. Oblong octavo (14.7 × 17 cm). Original white leather with gold, red, and black armorial stamping; all edges gilt; [2] pp., title, 1 pp. poem by Harmann Hangoo, followed by 11 fine chromolithographic plates showing an illustrated score by Haydn and scenes commemorating events in Vienna during the Napoleonic War of 1809. Housed in the original decorative paper-covered box. Two corners of the box broken; other light wear and rubbing; else very good. First edition. A striking favor for those in attendance of the 1909 Viennese State Ball, held to commemorate the centenary of the second conquest of Vienna by Napoleon. Celebrating the centenary of the composer Haydn, this book is a striking example of the elegant Secessionist design popular at this time. The designer, Remigius Geyling (1878-1974), was an Austrian painter, illustrator, and set designer who studied under Karl Krager at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, where he later also taught. This copy also features the small booklet (11.5 × 6.5 cm, 4 leaves), which is often missing, and which contains the order of dances for the evening. See "Wien um 1900," no. 591.
