About This Item

Boston, USA: Little, Brown and Company, 1955 Thirteenth and Centennial Edition. Completely Revised. 9th Printing. Rare edition. With an Index of Authors at the beginning of the book and a general Index at the back. Some age and shelf wear especially to dustjacket. Original dustjacket not price clipped. D/j in removable protective clear wrapper. D/j worn and torn around the edges. The boards have bumped corners. Inscription in blue ink on front endpaper. Otherwise no other internal markings, clean text pages. Tight copy. "This anniversary volume has been completely revised and edited by the editorial staff of the publishing house whose name has been connected with Bartlett's for the past ninety-two years. The section of anonymous work has been increased and reorganized for the reader's convenience. A general section includes quotations from songs, sayings, and political writings, while new selections from ballads, nursery rhymes, and foreign sayings and proverbs have been added. Finally, a number of changes have been made in format to make the new edition much easier to use. On each page the left and right columns have been designated alphabetically, so that the index references are now to columns instead of full pages. Each page of the index also carries running heads showing the first and last entry."
