Paris: Albert Levy, 1925. Paris: Albert Lévy (1925). 4to, portfolio with new cloth spine, ties missing. Silver panel on cover worn and flaking (stabilized); edge wear to plates and mild toning. Preliminary text was sewn but is now loose. This is the garden pavillion volume of the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs , the epitome of Art Deco applied arts design. Introduction and notes on the plates by Roux-Spitz, the acknowledged leader of the architectural profession in France at the time, according to Henry-Russell Hitchcock. One hundred heliogravure plates and illustrations in the text document the buildings and landscaping of the Exposition. French pavillions and gardens by Roux-Spitz, Perret, Garnier, Patout, Süe et Mare, Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier (Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau) and others, including the Pavillion d’un Collectionneur (an adaptation by Pierre Patout of the house he had built for Ruhlmann), the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Pavillon Lalique, etc. The Austrian pavillion was designed by Josef Hoffmann, the Belgian pavillion by Horta and the USSR pavilion by Melnikoff.. 1928. ROUX-SPITZ, Michel. BATIMENTS ET JARDINS. Exposition des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, 1925. Cent planches en heliogravure avec une introduction et des notices par M. Roux-Spitz. Paris: Editions Albert Levy, [1928]. One hundred heliogravure plates (12 3/4 by 9 3/4 in.; 32.5 x 25 cm) in the original portfolio. The plates show minor edgewear and occasional light soiling to margins; otherwise they are clean and fine. The portfolio is sunned and very worn, with severe abrasions to the paper sides, and large chips to the head and heel of spine. However, the silver-gilt titles on the upper board and spine are unaffected, and the original ties are all present. An earlier, interior repair to the joints and spine is starting. The 55 page booklet containing the introduction, notes, and plans is crisp and unopened, with just a touch of soiling to the wrappers; the paper spine has split and the signatures are loose.
