About This Item
"Carolyn Bennett considers kaleidoscopes a contemporary art form and continues to do extensive research and experimentation. She is now considered to be one of the pioneers of the modern kaleidoscope movement. Her kaleidoscopes have been sold all over the world. Each of her kaleidoscopes is designed to be an interesting piece of sculpture, with the exterior as intriguing as the interior. She approaches the inner image as if it were a painting, combining colors and shapes to create complex and infinite patterns. The discovery of an ever unfolding world of color, art, philosophy, and beauty within the kaleidoscope continues to inspire her". --- from her website. The art of Salvador Dali graces this lovely piece with the great joy of a fly within the gems. The fly appears in the art by Dali that is on the piece Aphrodite of Milo in a work of Salvador Dali, The Hallucinogenic Torreador, with multiple hidden images. It primarily focuses on the torreador (bull-fighter), whose face is hidden within the repeated representation of the Venus de Milo. The upper portion of the painting contains the bull-fighter's arena, again surrounded by multiple images of the goddess. There is also a hidden image of the bull in the lower left quadrant of the painting (drinking water from a pool), and an image of a boy (possibly a self-portrait as a child, as his clothing represents the approximate time period of his boyhood).
