"From 55 B.C. to 410 A.D. a large area of Britain was part of the great Roman Empire, a well governed enclave, constantly under pressure from neighbouring hostile tribes and pirate raids. the comparative ease with which the Romans establish themselves caused Tacitus to accuse the British mockingly of being caned with novelties which they called civilisation, rights which were really a form of enslavement – novelties such as roads, public baths, amphitheatres and central heating. Anthony Thwaite uses surviving examples of Roman civilisation and passages from contemporary writers to give a picture of the impact the coming of the Romans made on Britain, when for four hundred years the country took on a character completely different from the preceding and succeeding ages." – from the front fold over panel blurb.
