Barney Barnato (1851-1897) was a British 'Randlord', an entrepreneur who controlled some of the diamond and later coal mines in South Africa. He died in mysterious circumstances near Madeira, with records stating that he was lost overboard. He was a rival to Cecil Rhodes, another mining magnate and Prime Minister of Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896 to whom he sold his stake in Kimberley the diamond mine. Rhodes went on to form De Beers.Banarto's son later bankrolled W. O.
