This item is currently on reserve; please contact dealer for more details. New York (1870): George R. Lockwood. Octavo. The last and best of the preferred editions issued in original publisher's full brown morocco, decorated in blind, raised bands, with title gilt, containing 500 superb hand-colored plates. Not only were the artists-illustrators able to use the original 435 plates from the double-elephant folio reducing the plates by camera lucida but they were also able to make certain only one species was depicted per plate, thus they were made available an additional 65 plates. The original plates were destroyed in a Philadelphia warehouse fire in the early 1870's. This rare edition collates the same as the reported copies at the University of California, Berkeley and Cornell with each bearing the 1870 date and containing the index at the end of Volume VIII (which is lacking in the other editions). Other libraries report variant editions lacking the index and the 1870 date. It is for this reason that later editions are reprinted without the index and the scarcity of this the last great and most preferred edition. Each plate perfect lacking any of the browning or spotting as was present even in the Pirie copy [which also had a severe tear on plate 259]. Even the Sigety copy had faint offsetting. This copy has been preserved with the original tissue guards and maintained in obvious ideal condition since its issue in 1870. Though they do not provide complete descriptive bibliographic notes, Sabin 2364 and Nissen 52 (as well as Reese's exhibit at the Grolier [Reese 34], our description here provides the most exact collation. Superb condition with the half-title present in all volumes. All plates are present with four plates in volume III present but bound out of sequence. [see below] Detailed collation is as follows: Beige backgrounds Volume I. Half-title, viii; xv, [11]12-246pp. Plates 1-70; Volume II. Half-title, vii, [11]12-199pp., Plates 71-140; Volume III. Half-title, viii, [9]10-233, Plates 141-210; sequence of plates 55 and 56 misbound and plates 87 and 88 misbound though all plates present.; Volume IV. Half-title, viii, [9]10-321pp. Plates 211-280. ; Volume V. Half-title, viii, [9]10-346pp., 281-350. Volume VI. Half-title, vii, [9]10-298pp., Plates 351-394; Volume VII. Half-title, vii, [9]10-285pp., Plates 395-440 Volume VIII. Half-title, viii, [9]10-266pp., with index to all eight volumes. Plates 441-500.

Engraving with etching, aquatint and hand-coloring on 1836 watermarked J. Whatman hand-made paper. Unusually wide, untrimmed margins showing the pulls from the binder's signatures on the left margin and the gilt to the top edge. "I closed my eyes, and was passing away into the world of dreaming existence, when suddenly there burst on my soul the serenade of the Rose-breasted bird, so rich, so mellow, so loud in the stillness of the night, that sleep fled from my eyelids. Never did I enjoy music more: it thrilled through my heart, and surrounded me with an atmosphere of bliss. One might easily have imagined that even the Owl, charmed by such delightful music, remained reverently silent. Long after the sounds ceased did I enjoy them, and when all had again become still, I stretched out my wearied limbs, and gave myself up to the luxury of repose." John James Audubon

Description:
New York J. J. Audubon, Philadelphia J. B. Chevalier, 1840 (1839) 1844. Hardcover. Good. First octavo edition of John James Audubon's Seminal work. Audubon created 65 new images for the octavo edition of 1827-38; the original configurations were altered so that only on species is depicted per plate. The Octavo edition of Audubon's Birds was probably the greatest commercial success of any color plate book issued in the 19th century America. While Audubon had become internationally famous in the course of producing the double-elephant folio edition of the Birds in London between 1826 and 1839, it was the octavo version, issued at $100, which achieved widespread circulation and brought the work into the homes of many well-to-do Americans. The text is a revision of the ornithological Biography rearranged according to Audubon's "A Synopsis of the Birds of North America" 91839) Ayer/Zimmer p22; Bennett p5; Mcgill/Wood, p208; Nissen IVB 51; Sabin 2364; Stamped with National…

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the…

From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. However it is much more than a summary of the facts, for these various adaptations have been interpreted in terms of natural selection, and the author has suggested how each of…
