384 pages with diagrams, tables and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 7 3/4") issued in wrappers. Volume XXIX (29). (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5957) First edition. The Wiener Schachzeitung, an Austrian chess magazine, published in German which was one of the great magazines of chess ran from 1898 through 1916 and then from 1923 through 1938. Originally founded in 1855 by Ernst Falkbeer, but was only published for nine months. In 1887 it enjoyed a rebirth, but even this publication lasted only nine months. In 1898 Hugo Fahndrich, Alexander Halprin and Georg Marco re-established the name again. As time went on Georg Marco became the sole editor and even the publisher. When it was renamed in 1923 it was called the Neu Wiener Schach-Zeitung and was edited by I R Wahle and A Lewitt; however, within a year it had recaptured its old title and in 1926 another great editor, Albert…

167 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4) issued in black with gilt lettering to spine. Translated by Mary Lasher. (Lusis: 1112) First British edition.
Bishop Endings is the fourth volume to appear of Averbakh's great classic series on the endgame. The original Russiqn edition quickly established a world-wide reputation ... these are the endgame books that Fischer had sent to him during his world championship match. The English translation has been updated and is by far the most complete work on bishop endgames ever published. Every one of 370 examples has its own diagrams. In both matches and tournaments, games are often adjourned at the moment that the endings is reached. It is then that any player without the most authoritative work to refer to puts himself at a great disadvantage and is in danger of throwing away both half and whole points. Bishop Endings can help to solve a player's adjournment problems ... 370 diagrams, in conjunction with the detailed contents list, make it easy for the reader to fine any particular type of position.
Condition:
A better than very good copy in a very good to fine jacket.

viii+144 pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in blue stiff boards. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5267). First edition. For the second time Carl Schlechter shared a first prize in a German competition. A strong pre-tournament favorite, the Austrian visitor began well with three out of four points but then allowed to many draws to overcome a sixth-round defeat to Rudolf Swiderski. Among the costly "Remis" were uninspired draws against the 10th-12th place finishers. Leo Fleischmann, Horatio Caro and Walter John, and a last-round draw against his old Graz nemesis, Johann Berger. Another vital half-point went a glimmering in the tenth round when Schlechter, after brilliantly outplaying Os Bernstein, unaccountably overlooked a clear win and allowed the young Russian to escape with a perpetual check. Swiderski (+6 -3 =3), one of two other first-place winners, enjoyed a fine tournament, defeating both Schlechter and Curt von Bardeleben to finish the tourney with the most…
