New York: The Bibliographical Society of America, 1993. hardcover. New York. 8.5 x 11 inches. hardcover. 300 pages. This register collects, from annual city directories, about 5,000 names and 50,000 addresses of individuals and firms working in New York in the book trades and graphic arts areas during the period 1821-1842. It continues George L. McKay's similar work, published by the New York Public Library in 1942, which collected the names of craftsmen and artisans to 1820. The recorded occupations, addresses, firm names and other dated information provide help in dating undated books, papers and pictures, and in identifying anonymous printers, publishers artists and the like. The Register also provides a record of those who were engaged in more than 125 interconnected trades and professions, including calligraphers, compositors, editors, literary agents, map colorers, paper rulers, stereotypers, tract agents, wood engravers and many others. Though the bulk of the Register lists those active in…

Winner of the 2020 Leab Category 2 Book Award: "The creative and dynamic design coupled with the comprehensive content of this catalog contribute to the stand-out character of Wise Men Fished Here. The committee was pleased that the catalog featured conversation regarding not only the collection and its history, but also the process of cataloging, describing and exhibiting the material. The under-told story of the woman bookseller at the center of the exhibition, and her influence on the arc of modernism, has both high scholarly value and broad appeal to a general public." - Leab Awards Committee Catalog for the exhibition of books, magazines, and ephemera from the Gotham Book Mart collection at the University of Pennsylvania from February 18 - May 20, 2019. You will find information in this book on and around desktop publishing that you are unlikely to find anywhere else -- certainly not all collected in one place." - David Walden, TUGboat Volume 41, No. 1 "There were so many players, so many companies. So much to know and to understand. But Frank Romano has the unique background, skills and resources to take this on. He has produced an amazingly comprehensive, rich, and detailed history. All presented in an easy, personal, accessible fashion that draws you in and keeps you turning the pages. It is truly a Tour de Force!" - Jonathan Seybold "There's just so much in this book. Its a…

Description:
Australia: Opifex, 2020. Paperback. 6 × 9 inches. Paperback. 144 pages. "Chicago Modernism and the Ludlow Typograph is copiously illustrated... Gehl's writing is lucid and jargon-free. His fluent and engaging manner makes the book a pleasure to read." - Paul Shaw, Journal of Design History, Vol. XX No. XX "...there is not a misplaced phrase here and [Gehl's] research is excellent... Gehl's masterful distillation is particularly welcome. It is also both readable and enjoyable." - Steven Heller, Parenthesis 42 "At the core of Gehl's fascinating account of a most improbable yet successful typographic partnership is America's tentative steps toward Modernism at a time when revivalism remained prevalent and the modern spirit was considered to be culturally of dubious intent. Gehl chronicles in engrossing detail and with admirable clarity the subversive energies of McMurtrie, a modernist who would tell anyone willing to listen, and Middleton, a moderniser who preferred his typefaces to do the…

Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
