Memoir of author's experiences as a nurse from 1862-1865 in Washington, D.C. including the death of her brother. Boys in white is a reference to the way the soldiers' bodies were prepared for burial. Julia S. Wheelock Freeman (1833 - 1900) , a Michigan native, spent three years in Washington, DC nursing injured Civil War veterans as a volunteer with the Michigan Soldiers Relief Association. The US House of Representatives recognized Wheelock Freeman for her service as "a brave woman, a patriot in the highest sense of the term.

Per Nevins, "One of the better, straightforward accounts of life in Federal hospitals; Miss Wheelock was stationed through the last three years of the war at Alexandria, VA. Wheelock was part of the Michigan Relief Association and brought supplies to and wrote letters for soldiers in hospitals/field hospitals. The Michigan troops that she encountered were from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th cavalry, the 1st--8th and 16th, 20th. 24th and 26th Infantry.
