Rare first edition of a well-known book by William Edward Webb, a paleontologist and land man who worked for the Kansas Pacific railroad encouraging settlement of the Western United States, particularly Western Kansas and Colorado. The main portion of the book discusses all sorts of adventures, including details of buffalo hunting, Indian culture, and travel through to the west.
The Appendix has detail about homestead laws, how to prove up a land grant, costs of preparation and farming, how to hunt the buffalo, the appeal of the lifestyle--the rivers, the terrain, the climate of the plains, the supply of lumber... The full appendix contents has been photographed for your review.
The list of illustrations, a portion of which has been photographed for your review--and two examples of the many engravings are photographed.
The Table of Contents has a two-page selection photographed. Contents includes stories of Alaska, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming; buffalo hunting on the plains, hunting of elk, turkey, etc.; wild horses; paleontology of Kansas; characters including and Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill and much, much more.

Condition:
This original hard cover book is a real beauty with its gilt on the cover and spine. It was professionally re-backed, with the original spine re-applied. The binding is secure and all illustrations and pages are present and accounted for. There are some smudges in the book and a bit of foxing, but mostly it's just the tanning of the old pages. New hand sewn head bands and end pages make this a real super find! Appendix contents photographed. Selected portions of the Table of Contents and the List of Illustrations photographed for your review, as well as a couple of the engraved illustrations.
