Great Britain: Hastings Museum. Very Good/Good. 1956. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Burton's St. Leonards. Foxing to end inside covers shelf wear and tear to top edge of spine of D/J.. For some strange reason little has appeared in print about James Burton, the founder of St. Leonards. In the Dictionary of National Biography he is only mentioned as the father of James Haliburton the Egyptologist and he has generally beeen overshadoed by another son, Decimus Burton, the famous architect. For some years the Hastings Museum has been collection material relating to this remarkable man and this little book is in tribute to his memory. it may also draw attention to the relatively small size of the original town, now expanded so greatly as a postatl district. Contents: The Beginning. James Burton the Founder. Early years. The St. Leonards Imprvoement Act. The Royal Visitors. The Two Towns. Description of the Town. Appendix (i) Children of James and Elizabeth Burton. (ii) Commissioners for the Improvement Act, 1832. (iii) Incumbents of St. Leonards. Index. Illustrated. 68 pp. For some strange reason little has appeared in print about James Burton, who single-heanded founded the little town of St. leonards in 1828, a remarkable achievement by any standard. In the Dictionary of National Biography he is only mentioned as the father of James Haliburton the Egyptologist and he has generally beeen overshadoed by another son, Decimus Burton, the famous architect. In 1956 the Hastings Museum staged a special exhibition drawing on its collection of pictures and records entitled 'Burton's St. Leonards' to draw more attention to his work especially locally, since few Hastingers had heard of him. This little volume was published as a modest tribute to the great London developer, whoc nursed a private vision of building a perfect town and lived to see it come true. It has had considerable success particularly in America and has been much in demand by students. Contents: The Beginning. James Burton the Founder. Early years. The St. Leonards Imprvoement Act. The Royal Visitors. The Two Towns. Description of the Town. Appendix (i) Children of James and Elizabeth Burton. (ii) Commissioners for the Improvement Act, 1832. (iii) Incumbents of St. leonards. Index. Illustrated. 68 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
