Published by Victor Gollanz Ltd, London; 1961. First Edition, First Printing. **Association Copy** Condition: Very Good+/Near Fine.
This is a remarkable example of this first edition of John Le Carré's first novel, the book that introduces George Smiley to the world for the first time. It is truly a must have for any avid collector of Le Carré's work.
Bound in original red cloth binding with gilt title to the spine, other than some minor bumping to the edges, slight fading to the spine, a a couple of tiny marks, the binding is in excellent, smart condition. Inside, on the fep and ffep there are a number of old tape marks, where some of the newspaper cuttings that accompany it were once affixed. Also to the ffep is a dedication note reading: 'To all the elves, pixies, fairies and geese; to bad Baron Blundell and furtive Stormont, with love D. Chester (alias le Carré) 30 v 61.
The dust jacket is also in lovely condition, with just a little mild rubbing and bumping to the edges, else very smart indeed and unclipped, showing the original price of 13/6 net to the front flap. The only point to note is some very careful and professional restoration to the front flap. This is, however barely noticeable and has kept the jacket in almost perfect condition.
This wonderful book is accompanied by many newspaper clipping regarding the novel, John Le Carré and John Bingham (Lord Clanmorris). Many of these are annotated, including one that states 'I was Smiley's secretary (and worked with David Cornwell) M. G'
In all, this is a very rare and unique example of this first edition, with links to the author and to Bingham, the inspiration for George Smiley. This is an excellent opportunity to add a highly collectible copy of this first edition of such a popular and interesting author's debut novel.

NY, Robert M. McBride, 1929, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover.. Author's First Book, first issue with top edge stained and with the final black leaf present, with the rare colorful pirate dust jacket illustrated by Mahlon Blaine, one of only 1,537 copies, published when Steinbeck was 27 years old and just two weeks before the 1929 stock market crash, a historical novel about the pirate Henry Morgan rendered in a purple prose manner quite unlike his realistic descriptive storytelling that followed, Goldstone & Payne A1a, Morrow 1.
