NY: Dodd, Mead & Co. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Decorative green cloth binding with design of flowering cotton plants under the moonlight by Margaret Armstrong. Armstrong also designed elaborate decorative borders for all of the poems in this collection. Illustrated with many photograph reproductions of African-Americans playing with their children, wooing, tending horses, fishing, interacting with white employers and even two shots of black Civil War soldiers in uniform by members of the Hampton Institute, an historically black college (now Hampton University) in Virginia. Top edges gilt. Title page and many other pages printed in black and green. 127pp. Very Good. Boards rubbed, spine toned, owner name on front flyleaf, rear lower corner bumped, silverfish damage to rear boards Quite a lovely volume of poetry in both standard English and dialect enhanced by photographs of some turn-of-the century African-Americans at work and leisure and Armstrong's lush decorations. While some of Dunbar's poetry sounds old-fashioned or stilted to modern ears, he is a significant figure in American letters, "lauded as a writer in the vanguard of the crusade for black rights and also damned as an accommodationist. Few writers have been asked by so many to represent so much". His prolific writings makes him "...important as a writer and a cultural symbol, for both his time and ours." (see Paul Laurence Dunbar: A Bibliography, by E. W. Metcalf, Jr. , p. Vii) LCP/HSP 3325. BAL 4937 B. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

[North Montpelier, VT]: The Driftwind Press. Very Good; Wraps soiled.. 1931. First Edition. Softcover. One of 250 copies. Yellow printed wraps. Introduction by Walter John Coates. Tyler was a Harvard lawyer noted for helping to suppress Shay's Rebellion, who later moved to Vermont, eventually becoming a law professor and Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. He also wrote poems and plays, including "The Contrast", in 1787, which is noted by The Oxford Companion to American Literature as being the second play and the first comedy to be written by an American author. "The Chestnut Tree" is a longish poem foretelling a more industrialized New England and America. This 1824 poem was believed lost until a handwritten copy was found among a descendant's papers. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250.
