The Catcher in the Rye

by J. D. Salinger

  • Used
  • Hardcover

Stated first edition; A beautiful copy of this masterpiece of 20th century literature, housed in a custom clamshell box. A very good plus book in a very good to near fine dust jacket. Publisher's black cloth with titles stamped in gold on the spine. Original dust jacket with Lotte Jacobi photo credit on the rear panel of the jacket and 3.00 price intact; this is the 2nd issue DJ with space between the top of the author's head and the top of the back panel and the $3.00 price on the front flap to the right of the "R" in "Catcher" (1st issue jackets the $ sign should line up with the shoulder of the "R"....changed in later issues). The very good plus book is clean and tight with slightly faded lettering to the spine and crisp, white pages with only light spotting to the first few pages; the front board is slightly bowed and minor bumping is present on the bottom spine end. Some minor staining is present to the textblock edges. Housed in a very good to near fine dust jacket that shows mild shelf wear to the ends and edges with a small stain near the spine tail and a dark vertical tape stain to both flaps, presumably from a sleeve attachment of some kind. Overall, a clean, bright, tight, attractive copy of Salinger's classic.
The Catcher in the Rye has been consistently listed as one of the best novels of the twentieth century and is now a part of PBS's Great American Read, further testifying to it's staying power as one of America's favorite novels.
"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." Holden Caulfield

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
