1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Rare complete portfolio of 100 lithographs from his Architecture Pittoresque ou Monuments des 15th et 16th Siecles--36 cm x 28 cm (about 14" x 11") on thick paper, alphabetical index, some marginal foxing to #20, 31, 36, 39, 48, 49, 56, 63, 64, 68, 71, 80, 87, and 97; more severe foxing into the image on #33, 46, 51, 69, 70, 74, 77, 78, and 93. Inocuous thin strip of dirt to plates #18, 21, 22, 37, 44, 47, and 57. Minor tears to tp else VG; scarce title found in few libraries and fewer architectural firms even in France. Excellent architectural renderings of medieval French facades including chateaux throughout the country, some with people in streets, alleys, streams, etc. French titles and text. Rear foxing appears on several but without effect to front. #54 is chipped along the fore-edge. Foxing also extends to the title page, half title page and the 4-page accompanying booklet of plate recognition. A marvellous overview of the better castles (some in ruins) for this 200-year period. The original ribbon stays are missing, the backstrip is a green piece of buckram covering the original red strip now entirely lost. Internal gutters show green taping to inside overs--original covers are present. 1861 is a guess. This is oversized portfolio - addtl shipping costs may be required.

Description:
Set of 36 handcoloured lithographs after satirical illustrations by Jean-Gabriel Scheffer from What one says and what one thinks, Little Scenes of the World. An album of rare lithographs that depict comical scenes of daily life in Paris during the reign of King Charles X, in the Restoration era. Women in the voluminous puff-sleeved dresses and bonnets of the time, the men in elegant jackets and pants, lounging in restaurants, cafes, libraries, gardens and galleries. With title page and 36 hand-coloured plates lithographed and printed by Gihaut Frères in Paris (last six plates printed by Charles Tilt, London). These delightful satirical scenes mock the hypocrisies and annoyances of bourgeois society, in the same way as Thomas Rowlandson depicted the Miseries of Human Life in Regency England. The captions show what the characters say on the left, and what they really think on the right. Women flatter Plain Janes and ugly men, men flatter ugly women, a widow takes a new lover before her husband's… Read More

Description:
This collection of original material of Jerome Myers includes two photographs of Jerome Myers, taken by Leo Grubman, one taken in 1910 [when they shared an art gallery and studio] and signed by Leo Grubman, the other taken by Grubman circa 1932. There is a photograph of his wife Ethel (photographer not identified). After his success at the Armory Show in 1911 with the sale of his painting "The Mission Tent" he was able to move into a new studio at the new Carnegie Hall building. There are two warmly personal letters with biographical items of interest plus some artistic representation. The first letter is to his friend Leo Grubman, dated January 21, 1914, and discusses with pride his daughter Virginia's dance recital and his busy schedule. There is a second letter (lacking the first page) of one page signed "Jerome" and circa 1915 of his move to Carmel, New York where he bought 18 acres in a very rustic setting (where he has made a few nice ink sketches along the margins of the letter). A small corner… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
