London [Cambridge]: Clover Hill Editions [Printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press], 1977. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Jones, David. One of 250 copies, folio size, 45 pp., with dust jacket. From the web site of PB Press Books: "The 'Chester Mystery Plays' is a cycle of mystery plays originating in the city of Chester, England and dating back to at least the early part of the 15th century ('Chester Mystery Plays')....The plays are based on biblical texts, from creation to the Last Judgement. They were enacted by common guildsmen and craftsmen on mounted stages that were moved around the city streets, with each company or guild performing one play." This book presents ten stunning wood engravings by David Jones (1895-1974), who was both a writer and an artist. As a writer, he was one of the first-generation British modernist poets and was highly regarded by both T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden. As an artist, he learned wood and copper engraving from Eric Gill, providing…

Cloth backed marbled boards, d.w., spine slightly sunned. The engravings were originally made for a Golden Cockerel Press edition in 1927, but their reproduction was a disappointment to Jones. Towards the end of his life he agreed for this edition to be made from the original blocks, and although only 8 were found at the time the other two came to light after his death, just as printing was about to begin.

Published by Clover Hill Editions, London in 1977. Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones agreed to 'Clover Hill Editions' reprinting the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present…
