About This Item

Troy, NY: Nims and Knight, 1890. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. I.M. Gaugengigl and T.V. Chominski. Handsome 1890 edition of the Dickens classic, issued in a larger (Quarto) format and lavishly illustrated thruout in full-page black-and-white and copper etchings by I.M. Gaugengigl and T.V. Chominski. All etchings in pristine condition and all including their original tissue-guards. The book is solid and VG+ in its duotone cloth, with bright gilt-titling and decorative flourishes along the front panel and spine. A touch of light soiling to the panels, otherwise clean as could be and, internally, very sharp, with no writing or markings of any kind. A very presentable copy of this impressive late 19th century American edition published out of Troy, NY.

Synopsis

The full title of Charles Dickens' most famous work is technically A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas. This novella was published on December 19, 1843, and the first edition run of 6000 copies were sold out by Christmas Eve of that year. The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and even though the book was received to positive reviews, profits of the book fell far below Dickens' expectations, and the financial strain caused rifts between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.

On Oct 7 2014, a reader said:
It was interesting to read this story and see what was from Dickens' original text and was part of the many movie adaptations about Scrooge evil ways coming back to haunt him.
